Session Type: Symposium
This symposium convenes a group of Freedom Schools scholars and practitioners who are making critical contributions to anti-racist pedagogies. Their work is featured in a special issue of Urban Education. First formed as part of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Project, Freedom Schools counter the lack of quality education for Black and Brown children. These programs continue that historical struggle and continue as a source of educational innovation within the Black pedagogical tradition. Supported by the Children’s Defense Fund since the 1990s, Freedom Schools emphasize liberatory education through critical literacy learning, social action, intergenerational leadership development, and family engagement. This panel makes a critical contribution to efforts to advance anti-racist pedagogies, particularly in a moment when such efforts are under attack.
