Design-Strengthening Strategies for Longitudinal and Multilevel Mixed-Methods Studies of Education Systems

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 4th Floor, Belmont - Avenue Ballroom

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The purpose of this methodological symposium is to present strategies for strengthening complex mixed methods (MM) studies. The exemplar study that grounds this methodological discussion is a statewide longitudinal and multilevel exploration of schools’ support systems and students’ course-taking trajectories aimed at improving high school college-readiness programming. It includes quantitative analyses of transcript data for multiple cohorts of graduates and case studies informed by qualitative interviews with students and staff across the state. We describe how we confronted practical constraints and made pivotal decisions to maximize the potential of the data and integration of strands of inquiry. This symposium is appropriate for new and experienced MM researchers interested in developing capacity for large-scale MM research partnerships with educational leaders.
