Growing Through Gates: Analyzing How Critical Studies Enhance Scholarship Programs

Abstract

The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program (GMSP) was established in 1999 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Essentially, the GMSP’s primary intention is to provide expanded collegiate opportunities for minority students, specifically by alleviating financial strains. However, we argue an emphasis on critical consciousness is also crucial to the achievement of Gates Scholars.
Using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Model (1987) along with Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth (2005) framework and Tinto's Retention Theory (1993), this paper aims to further discuss the measures that the GMSP has taken and has neglected to take when accounting for the retention of Black Gates Millennium Scholars. This paper concludes by suggesting ways to approach student retention more holistically.
