"Children Know a Lot About Safety and Unsafety": Responding to Terrorism With Young Children

Abstract

This case study closely investigates the reasoning, planning, and subsequent response staff and two Jewish student teachers undertook during a social-action project with children aged 5-9 years. The Tree of Life project was initiated within days of the October 27, 2018 extremist hate crime at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, which left 11 Jewish worshipers dead, others physically wounded, and a wake of trauma and sadness. Unfortunately, gun and hate-related tragedies like the above are not isolated, thus teachers are tasked with the heavy social responsibility of processing and responding to these events with children.
