"We Were Waiting For ...": The New Public Education in Chile in the Voice of Principals Transitioning From Municipalities to Local Education Services

Abstract

The process known as municipalization of schools in Chile began in 1980, decentralizing the administration of public-school education. Almost 40 years after municipalization, the state has shifted gears toward a model of local public education agencies or services (SLEP). In this context, the question of how the current principals of public schools observe the process of implementing SLEPs is critical. Using interviewing techniques we aimed to answer that question. We have been able to verify that, in the opinion of the principals, the beginning of the implementation of the SLEP shows essential strengths and weaknesses. These results shed light on the Chilean research plan for implementing a New Public Education system.
