System of Civility: An Extended Case Study on Workplace Bullying in Higher Education (Poster 21)

Abstract

Higher education is withstanding the silent epidemic of workplace bullying. This phenomenon occurs when more powerful colleagues abuse their power with colleagues. To examine the problem, our research team interviewed 18 associate and full professors to collect their reactions to an evolving eco-system model and answer the central research question: What organizational elements should colleges and universities recognize in developing and sustaining policy to prohibit workplace bullying? By interviewing four faculty members weekly, then revising the model for the following week’s panel, our team developed a comprehensive eco-system that reflects the multiple elements of workplace bullying. The findings also should guide policymakers to incorporate these elements to design a comprehensive anti-bullying policy for their respective campuses.
