Abstract

Via this paper, researchers address AERA’s 2023 theme: “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth.” In this conceptual piece, we argue that to encourage truthful and more usable scholarship, the field of educational research should move away from the fuzzy and ineffective notion of “impactful research” based on indirect scholarly metrics, such as the source of publication or rejection rates and towards a more comprehensive and field-specific set of scholarly assessment strategies. Based on our experience as faculty and impactful journal editors, we focus on the challenges and shortcomings of the current assessment models of research impact on education, and then develop and explain an alternative and conceptually improved proposal based on usability and trustworthiness.
