Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Science fiction conventions offer science tracks explaining the science behind the fiction. This study documented how 12 attendees conceptualized connections between science fiction and science as well as their perceived STEM identity via a semi-structured interview protocol. Most attendees shared their exposure to science fiction and science originated during childhood, cited the importance of a community at these events, and shared science questions are often generated as a result of what occurs in science fiction media. Attendees advocated for more science content embedded in convention activities. Lastly, attendees’ STEM identities were deemed disruptive due to challenges and barriers in STEM identity development. Findings provide novel insight those science experiences connect to STEM identities via science fiction conventions.
