Abstract

Education has changed from a milestone reached in early adulthood to a lifelong process that continues over the life course. This paper takes a life course perspective of education to examine how education trajectories evolve over the life course and how they have changed across multiple cohorts. Using education history data from the Health and Retirement Study and longitudinal data from the NLSY79 and NLSY97, I examine the prevalence and patterns of education enrollment and attainment in adulthood. Education is complex feature of inequality and stratification, and better understanding educational trajectories through adulthood may provide insights into the different ways education creates or mitigates inequality over time and across cohorts.
