Abstract

The Hmong Helping Hands Intervention (HHHI) was a prevention and intervention program meant to reduce chronic depression, anxiety, and acculturation issues in Hmong adults and elders by increasing awareness of mental health issues and improving physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. A hard-working, bilingual, and bicultural staff who are fluent in Hmong, familiar with Hmong culture, and respectful of elderly clients, developed and provided a promising, compelling, and helpful array of services to older Hmong. These innovative and culturally responsive services offered hope to older Hmong in reversing persistent psychological distress. Elders improved on most of the measures of psychological distress, interference from negative emotions, and sense of connection and belonging. Cultural variables demonstrated ceiling effects suggesting resilience of elders.
