Newcomer Youth's Sociocultural Inclusion in Schools and Communities in Texas: Two Cases From Texas

Abstract

Newcomers to the United States face enormous challenges as they seek to integrate into a new society. Among these challenges newcomer youth face in schools and communities include sociocultural exclusion, Immigration policies, programs at federal, state, and local levels. Mitigating these issues in schools and communities will prevent injustice in schools, workplaces, communities, and societies. Thus, through qualitative phenomology in this study, we aim to explore the ways to reduce immigrant youth’s sociocultural exclusion in schools and communities through the voices of educators to contribute to the inclusion and equity of immigrant youth and their families in 4 case schools in Austin, Texas. The data yielded several themes as challenges of teachers and immigrant students, support systems and educators’ strategies
