Abstract

There is no question that a long-held ways of substance rooted lives are changing for communities in the circumpolar north (Kofinas, et al. 2016). In addition to ecological, cultural, and material consequences of a rapidly accelerating climate crisis, this research project surfaced changes to the practices of teaching. Drawing on interviews with Alaska teachers, this paper explores ways that teaching practices have been shaped by a changing (Sub)Arctic using frameworks from critical place-based education (Gruenwald, 2003). These explorations have important implications for our collective understanding of the bounds of environmental education and for the work of teacher educators.
