The Role of Students' Motivation in Engagement and Performance in Online Learning in Higher Education Settings: A Systematic Analytical Review

Abstract

This systematic review examined how motivation has been defined, measured, and used in online learning research in higher education settings and what the effects of motivation are on students’ engagement and performance in online learning. The review was based on the PRISMA protocols and included 74 articles with 78 quantitative studies. The results show that motivation has been a growing topic. This field has growing to include more diverse theories and perspectives in the studies. Motivation had both positive and negative relationship with engagement and performance outcomes, mostly due to varying types of motivation and outcomes. The effect sizes are distributed from weak, moderate, and strong. This study offers implications to online teaching and learning practice in higher education.
