Affective citizenship identifies which emotional relationships between people are recognized and endorsed or rejected, and how citizens are encouraged to feel about themselves and others. This paper aims to expand upon the concept of affective citizenship and how it can be used in a ‘rational’ field like education by focusing on the role of emotions in the discussion of controversial issues that are part of citizenship education. The findings of this study provide a more nuanced picture of how secondary school teachers think about the role of emotions during citizenship education practices and offer an innovative, much-needed view on how emotions are constructed, contained, and managed during classroom discussions.
