Narratives of Active Learning Through Projects in a Diverse Middle School Classroom

Abstract

We address the need to enhance student learning experiences through active learning and high-impact practices, as a way to address potential gaps in cultural knowledge and experiences between students and instructors and/or educational administrators to unintentionally negatively affect student academic success. Our narrative inquiry centers on students and their cultural experiences within high-impact practices as a multicultural education-in-action approach. We consider project learning regarding diversity and global learning with individual and group components across a set of learning activities that took place over one entire academic year. We deliberate over the impact of the project on students from cultural and curricular perspectives. We focus on a K-12 school, to gain insight into applications of high-impact practices in K-12 schools.
