Abstract
This is a blended qualitative arts-based methods study of high school students, aged 16-17 years old, from an art and design high school in a large midwestern urban city. The purpose of this research is to show how museum collections can be used in a culturally responsive manner to promote critical thinking and create culturally responsive museum and art-making experiences for young people by using a critical pedagogy of representation to confront master narratives and systems of inequity. In this research, concepts of domination, power and identity are confronted via examination of early American genre painting and sculpture and the work of Kehinde Wiley.
