Abstract

Understanding that a sociality of emotion is at work can aid us in examining the circularity of emotion in the current climate that produced Jan. 6 and our involvement in these processes. Sara Ahmed and Jane Addams guide this examination of how emotions work to shape reality. They work in tandem to not only offer explanations for why despite nationwide and global protests, news reports of violence by both civilians and law enforcement, social transformation does not occur, and oppressive power relations remain entrenched. Nothing changes, but possibilities always beckon. Their understandings of how emotions work reveal how we can strive to respond in healing ways to the possibilities for individual and collective change.
