Learning-in-Practice to Become Contextually Responsive Teachers via a Mixed-Reality Learning Environment: Wisdom From Developing Preservice Teachers

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: West Tower - Ballroom Level, San Francisco

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of an innovative learning environment, mixed-reality virtual live simulation (M-RVLS), designed to provide novel learning experiences to preservice teachers (PSTs) in conjunction with the methods courses in a Multiple Subject Credential Program. Specifically, it intentionally sought the PSTs’ perspective on the M-RVLS: its valuable aspects to their learning to become teachers and its perceived value to student learning and educator preparation. Through collaborative domain analysis of focus questions from the project’s survey (n=233) completed by 99 PSTs in three separate courses for two semesters, this study offers PSTs’ wisdom gleaned from their experience that can inform the integration of innovative learning environments that simulate the real-world contexts prior to entering in the actual classroom.
