Intersectionality theory garners attention from researchers interested in understanding the complex ways the many forms of oppression interact with educational experiences. An individual's social position is shaped through the intersection of the many aspects of their identity. To date, the influence different statistical techniques for quantitatively analyzing intersectionality have on the alignment of methods with theory has been under-theorized. This paper aims to bring the tools necessary to education researchers to investigate their work from an intersectional lens. Through critical analysis of the conceptual and statistical limitations of two common approaches to capturing intersectional identities in regressions, this paper guides researcher who wish to examine educational issues through an intersectional frame.
