"A Weight to Carry": Experiences of Master's-Level Counseling Faculty Teaching a Multicultural Counseling Course (Poster 14)

Abstract

The dual pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism have disproportionately affected racially marginalized groups, highlighting the need for culturally informed counseling practices at a systemic level. Yet, there is sparse literature on how counselor educators should approach multicultural counseling training to meet this need. Using semi-structured interviews (n=9), we interviewed counselor educators about their experience teaching multicultural courses to understand their teaching process and goals, as well as the challenges they face in preparing future counselors to be culturally humble. Themes related to burden, navigating limited support, the dynamic nature of the course, and achieving multicultural training aims emerged. These themes as well as systemic implications for counseling programs, academic institutions, and the profession are discussed.
