Based on assumptions of investment theories, we carried out a longitudinal study and tested whether students’ initial levels of need for cognition, fluid intelligence, and crystallized intelligence predict change in each of the other variables over the course of one school year. The sample comprised 468 students from 24 classes in four German high-track schools (Grades 7, 8, or 9). Initial need for cognition positively predicted change in fluid intelligence. Initial fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence positively predicted change in need for cognition. Initial fluid intelligence positively predicted change in crystallized intelligence. Change scores of need for cognition, fluid intelligence, and crystallized intelligence were positively correlated indicating common developmental processes of the three constructs.
