Can a Brief Workshop on Structural Oppression Increase Critical Consciousness and the Ability to Identify Gatekeepers?

Abstract

Critical consciousness is the literacy of text and social conditions, particularly structural oppression. The sample consisted of 245 undergraduate students from an urban university in New Jersey that represented students from racially and economically diverse backgrounds. They were randomly assigned to either the control, structural oppression video, or structural oppression workshop. The results indicated students in the structural oppression workshop could identify gatekeepers after attending the workshop. The was no significant difference in the level of critical consciousness. Raising one's critical consciousness and awareness of gatekeepers could be a protective factor for marginalized groups to cope with oppression effectively.
