A "Radical Repositioning": Developing and Fostering Community-University Research Partnerships That Privilege Local Knowledge

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

This on-going study investigates community-based models of research and how these can be used to develop collaborative university-community partnerships and help universities and academic researchers rethink their role within community settings. The study focuses on projects that premise local knowledge as a way of addressing specific issues, and that take place in diverse contexts (in Taiwan, Puerto Rico, and Chicago), in an effort to identify productive elements and challenges of research projects that bring together community organizations and academic institutions. Such work often requires a repositioning of relationships between universities and communities and the forging of asymmetrical relationships that are weighted towards community knowledge and concerns, which can be a challenge for institutions used to being in power.
