Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Michigan B

Abstract

One approach for altering campus cultures to support diversity, equity and inclusion and truly transforming campuses to meet equity goals is a new model identified called shared equity leadership. SEL is a leadership approach that scales DEI work and creates culture change by connecting individual and organizational transformation. Individuals embrace a personal journey towards critical consciousness to become a different type of leader, and collectively leaders embody new values and enact a set of practices that form new relationships and understandings, ultimately working to dismantle current systems and structures that inhibit equitable outcomes. When a campus has a critical mass of leaders engaged in this personal journey work, they can then work in concert using a new set of values and practices to meet equity goals and work for culture change. The presenter will discuss the origins, importance and facets of this model and its potential to transform postsecondary institutions so they can meet their equity goals.
