The Power of Assignments in Preparing Preservice Teachers to Create Equity-Based, Culturally Sustaining Literacy Curriculum

Abstract

This study looks at changes in preservice teachers’ (PSTs’) curriculum development based on the evolution of an assignment from a literacy methods course. The culminating assignment was creating a literacy unit plan for an elementary classroom. Over three years, the assignment prompt changed to be more explicitly focused on cultural responsiveness and equity. Findings show that these changes led to unit plans that were more embedded within students’ communities and lived experiences as well as more focused on student activism and voice. Given the current press to utilize scripted literacy curriculum and the pervasive lack of culturally sustaining curriculum for minoritized youth, it is imperative that PSTs are prepared to create equity-based curriculum grounded in students’ strengths and lives.
