Abstract

To support opportunities for youth in an increasingly complex 21st century learning landscape, educational research must consider how learning is connected across learners’ lives. A focus on making connections across learning contexts, including home, school, out-of-school, and online settings, can support more equitable and transformative possibilities for how learners navigate and thrive in spaces not designed for them. This paper illustrates that making connections between out-of-school learning contexts and other settings can support youth in STEM, with particular attention to the value of relationships across these contexts. Through one case of a near-peer mentorship model, this paper shows through example how relationships can be intentionally cultivated with youth to support their learning and connect them to opportunities.
