Computational Music Composition: K–12 Teacher Professional Development for Using Music Composition to Introduce Computer Coding

Abstract

K12 teachers are currently tasked with integrating computer science standards into other content areas creating a significant challenge due to their lack of experience in computer science. Through the design and implementation of an innovative professional development experience, this preliminary qualitative study examined the perspectives of K12 teachers who participated in a six-week online learning experience designed to teach computer coding principles through computational music composition. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews at the conclusion of the PD experience. Findings suggest participants found the activities engaging, and noted ways these activities could be integrated into their content areas. However, they also reported barriers such as time to address computer science standards and the need for professional development.
