Adding to the field of research disrupting the origins of US higher education, this paper will deepen our understanding of how Indigenous Peoples in California relate to and are impacted by the establishment of the University of California (UC) system, offering an analysis of one campus within the system—UC San Diego. In this examination, we demonstrate how this university system is entangled with dispossession, extraction, and exploitation that far preceded the founding of the US as a settler colonial nation-state. To this end, we ask: How does the pursuit of truth in educational research engage Indigenous dispossession and erasure?
