Hypervigilance, Gender Gaslighting, Exasperated Imposter Syndrome, and Gender Subterfuge: Nonbinary College Students' Gender-Eggshell-Walking

Abstract

Using Snorton’s (2009) concept of the psychic impact of passing and (mis)recognition, I use queer phenomenology (Ahmed, 2006) to explore nonbinary students’ experiences of being misgendered and (mis)perceived on campus. As a nonbinary BIPOC researcher, I interviewed six nonbinary collegians individually and used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2021) to illuminate the phenomena for this study. Preliminary findings include nonbinary students’ hypervigilance, experiences of gender gaslighting, and their navigation of perceptions and subterfuge.
