The Bridge to Student Success: Institutional Agents of Change at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Abstract

Research has shown that staff play an integral role in promoting college student success. However, there is very little research on staff at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and even less research on how staff support students within STEM disciplines at HSIs. Through a multi-case ethnographic approach, this study sought to explore the role of staff in computer science departments at four HSIs throughout various locations in the United States. Findings from this study suggest that staff at HSIs can make significant contributions in helping students navigate academic departments, develop a sense of belonging and help facilitate access to professional development opportunities.
