Publicly Engaged Scholarship at Private Universities

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

There is a renewed focus on the use of research to inform policy and identify solutions that address pressing public challenges such as climate change, political polarization, and policing. Within higher education, most public universities were founded with an explicit mission to serve and benefit their communities. But what role do private universities play in serving the public? To address this question, we conducted a case study of faculty from one R1 private university to examine the conditions within and beyond the university influencing scholarship aimed at public impact. Our findings suggest differences across disciplines for how engaged scholarship is defined and practiced. However, faculty across disciplines shared incentives, motivations, and barriers that can inform efforts to strengthen engaged scholarship.
