This paper focuses on our language teacher education program, and the impact of deepening partnerships with local communities in mutually beneficial activities focused on language learning and teacher preparation. The equitable dimensions and impact of such partnerships are often assumed, but rarely examined.
We offer three examples of community-engaged, anti-racist pedagogical practices and an analysis of their impact on teacher candidates. The examples are: the linguistic landscape assignment; English Conversation Program; and Family Math Night. We describe them, a critical narrative analysis of the students’ course contributions, and the impact of their participation on their knowledge, dispositions, and skills. The research question guiding this study is: how does the experiences of participating in community-engaged, anti-racist programming influence pre-service teachers?
