Moral Undertones in Disciplinary Expertise: Toward a Critical Phenomenology of Care

Abstract

We investigate the moral and ethical nature of disciplinary expertise and perception in technoscientific spaces. Premised on the foundation that morality has emotional and embodied qualities that are not always recognized, articulated or formulated explicitly in disciplined spaces we illustrate how these qualities often exist as moral undertones that undergird what can be felt and sensed as a matter of moral rightness or responsibility in disciplined, technoscientific spaces. We offer an empirical illustration of some of the ways in which such moral undertones may constitute and shape medical care in the context of physicians and other care-providers working with patients of chronic pain.
