Supporting Mathematics Coaches to Identify Productive Instructional Improvement Goals for Teachers

Abstract

As part of a professional development (PD) design study, we investigated whether and how mathematics coaches can be supported in learning to identify productive instructional improvement goals for individual teachers. Instructional improvement goals are productive if they are feasible for a teacher to attain and will likely result in immediate improvements in students’ learning once achieved. Coaches’ processes for identifying instructional improvement goals improved significantly over the course of the study. In this paper, we report on the observed developments in coaches’ processes for identifying instructional improvement goals and the means of supporting those developments. We also discuss implications for both research and practice.
