The Unity of Humans and Nature: Chinese Social Work Students' Narratives on Healing During the Pandemic

This study examines the narratives of 23 social work students to explore their understanding of healing. It adopts a Daoist perspective of the unity of humans and nature as the framework. Borrowing from narrative research and photo elicitation, I invited the students to share their healing moments using a photo. I documented the students’ answers and analyzed the data using the Daoist framework on three themes: Mutuality, Tranquility, and Integrity. 21 shared views that reflected the Daoist view of the unity of humans and nature. Findings are organized using three themes: The Mutuality of Healing; Nature and Personal Tranquility; and the Integrity of Humans and Nature. The study concludes with the significance of the Daoist view in social worker/teacher preparation.
