Abstract

John Dewey (1859-1952) and Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) lived in and theorized about times of rapid social transformation. Dewey, from America, articulated a philosophy of democracy for societies undergoing the transformations of industrialization. Makiguchi, from Japan, developed a theory of value creation in the context of a society fast modernizing. From different perspectives, they developed philosophies of education of remarkable convergence and called for moving away from narrow concern with truth for its own sake and towards a focus on knowledge as instrument to improve human life in concrete, specific circumstances
