A systematic review (SR) is a research methodology used to synthesize primary research. In educational sciences, SRs have been gaining increasing attention. However, valid best practices for conducting SRs in educational sciences are still missing. We conducted twelve qualitative interviews to learn from experienced SR researchers across the world in various educational disciplines. The interviews focused on the review process, team roles, technologies, ethical considerations, benefits, challenges, and the outlook for future SRs. Several themes were identified providing best practices for conducting SRs. The findings have implications for researchers who wish to conduct SRs, reviewers and editors of journals who publish SRs, and instructors who teach students to conduct SRs.
