Coordinating Closure: The Role of Abraham Flexner, the American Medical Association, and the Carnegie and Rockefeller Foundations in Restricting Access to Medical Education (Poster 25)

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This project traces the coordinated efforts (1900-1955) of the American Medical Association, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the Rockefeller Foundation to develop and enforce quality standards in medical education. We uncover how these white, elite institutions structured racialized benefits and burdens with catastrophic consequences for equitable access to medical education.
