This presentation will present on the impact of a play-based curriculum on young children’s social, emotional, and academic development. We will describe the impact of engaging in the curriculum across kindergartens and first grades in both a public urban school and a university-affiliated laboratory school. Data from the study shows that engaging in this curriculum supported students’ transitions both within and beyond the school day, children’s development in literacy, and children’s collaborative communication through play. This study is particularly critical in the current sociopolitical climate, where narrow views of academic development are prominent in public schools and where students of color are often not given opportunities for creative choice-based learning.
