This study investigates the integration of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, in self-directed language learning (SDLL) as perceived by YouTube content creators. Through in-depth interviews with 12 renowned language educators, the researchers investigated the specific ways these educators recommend utilizing ChatGPT, their own SDL processes, and the guidelines they suggest for fostering SDLL with AI. Findings reveal that ChatGPT serves as a loyal conversational partner, promoting language practice and support across various linguistic contexts. However, educators emphasize the importance of using AI strategically as a supplement, fostering critical awareness and self-discipline to maximize its benefits responsibly. The study contributes to the refinement of online language learning models as well as initial attempts to comprehend the impact of generative AI on SDL.
