Analysis of Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Proposed Interventions to Support Student Engagement in an Equity-Oriented Simulation

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study analyzes the types of interventions proposed by preservice teachers (PSTs) engaged in an equity-oriented digital simulation in the context of an elementary science methods course. Using the Teacher Moments’ open access digital platform, 111 PSTs participated in the simulation, To Intervene or not, pertaining to the case of two students from minoritized communities who are having trouble engaging in 4th grade science. PSTs are asked to propose three potential interventions they might use for each student to support their engagement. Inductive analysis of the proposed interventions revealed six different types: Relational, Curriculum and Instruction, Non-Cognitive interventions, Peers, Support, and External Resources. Implications for using simulations in teacher education to enhance PSTs' development of education equity mindsets are discussed.
