Investigating the Quality of Research Use: Methodological Learnings From a Five-Year Study

Abstract

International efforts to support educational improvement through research use have emphasized a need to shift from investigating how research is used, to how well it is used. This shift, though, has highlighted that there exists very little methodological guidance for investigating the quality of research use. To chart a response to this challenge, this paper takes up two methodological tendencies in research use studies – the employment of research use typologies and investigating research use as an individual activity. Drawing on empirical examples from a five-year study of quality research use, we argue for and illustrate the importance of moving beyond these tendencies to generate new understandings of quality research use as a practice and as a system.
