The Great Equalizing Experience: Exploring Low-Income Students' Perceptions of the Top 1%

Abstract

This proposal uses arts-based research to investigate and depict the experience of low-income students at a wealthy, private university. In the form of a comic strip, we use the figure of a branded coffee cup to explore and explain nuances of how students recognize and interact with markers of wealth. Visual depictions, inspired by participants’ words and imagery used in qualitative data collection, provide a richness to their educational experiences for both research and practice.
