Using Joint Displays to Support Meaningful Integration in Convergent Sequential Mixed Methods Designs

Abstract

This paper draws from a recent empirical study using a convergent sequential design to illustrate the potential that joint displays offer for facilitating meaningful integration in mixed methods research (MMR). Using our empirical work as an example, we discuss potential instances in MMR where convergent sequential designs may be appropriate. We then synthesize previous work that elucidates the value of joint displays to facilitate integration in MMR and provide an example from our empirical study overviewing how joint displays can be strategically used to facilitate integration in a convergent sequential study. We conclude by justifying the importance of meaningful integration in convergent sequential designs for promoting mixed methods studies that are both a) rigorous and b) carry transformative potential.
