Faculty Observational Analysis for Educational Repair: A Research Strategy to Advance Racial Equity in STEM Through Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Systemic inequity and racism in higher education are deeply rooted issues that negatively impact the experiences of minoritized students (MS) in STEM. Strengthening degree completion rates have largely focused on what students can do to shore up their academic performance. Here, we explore the experiences of MS, with a focus on faculty professional development, to advance racial equity in STEM and create more inclusive learning environments. The Institute for Meaningful Engagement (TIME) is a two year faculty professional development series that intentionally addresses environmental barriers that push MS out of their degree programs. We examine how faculty participation in TIME leads to increased implementation of evidence-based inclusive teaching via classroom observations, course syllabi analysis, and resource guide for faculty.
