Abstract

The advent of ChatGPT and other AI tools has significantly transformed academic writing processes and support structures within higher education. This study investigates the impact of ChatGPT on writing centers and student writing, focusing on student perceptions, the development of writing skills, the evolving role of writing centers, and ethical considerations. Through semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students and writing consultants, the research reveals that while ChatGPT enhances efficiency in tasks like brainstorming and source checking, it also raises concerns about over-reliance and its effect on critical thinking and creativity. Writing centers are adapting by emphasizing higher-order writing concerns and providing ethical guidance.
