Understanding Peer Relationships of Adolescent Girls with ADHD: Content Analysis on Voices Shared on TikTok (Poster 3)

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Students with ADHD can struggle socially and face peer rejection (Kok et al., 2016). Existing literature suggests that girls with ADHD face greater challenges in peer relationships and more severe dysfunction than boys(Lee & Hinshaw, 2006; Mikami & Hinshaw, 2006), lacking insights into the voices of girls with disabilities. Using participatory research methods(Vaughn & Jacquez, 2020) and content analysis (Krippendorff, 2019), the poster will illustrate how a research team, including women with ADHD, analyzed and explored TikTok postings made by girls with ADHD about their peer relationships. Emergent themes about wants, challenges, and advice will be detailed, along with details about the process of studying TikTok videos.
