Can Continuous Improvement Work in the Turbulent World of Urban Districts?

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 707

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Continuous improvement (CI) and improvement science have attracted interest throughout education because of their potential to systematically address “wicked problems.” (Bryk et al. 2015). At the heart of these methods are organizational routines that conceptualize a problem, devise and implement a strategy to address it, and collect and analyze data to understand what worked and under what conditions. Yet the orderly nature of this process belies the turbulent environment that characterizes urban districts. This session will explore the professional, political, and organizational dynamics that emerge amid the enactment of CI in the context of urban districts, and in doing so, will shed light on the applicability of CI in the districts that serve many of our most marginalized students.
