Abstract

This paper presents research about social isolation resulting from joblessness, and the impacts on young adults with significant health disabilities who have recently transitioned out of school. Personal perspectives were collected via a nationally representative qualitative dataset called the American Voices Project. A secondary analysis using a novel composite narrative methodology uncovered both the challenges encountered and the coping strategies engaged to address loneliness. A complex case is revealed of economic instability, stigma, and unintended impacts of policies like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Implications stress the need for multidimensional approaches to promote inclusion and independence. This paper contributes to broader discussions on social justice and effective policy interventions to repair and enhance community engagement.
