Meaningful Learning With Zines at the Punk Rock Museum: A Mixed-Methods Study

Sat, April 26, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study explored the use of zines (pronounced “zeen”) at the Punk Rock
Museum in Las Vegas, as a tool for enhanced and immersive learning. It aimed to close
the gap of visitors lacking testing, validation, and discussion of the content in their
process of fixating what they have learned in the museum. The goal of the study was to
answer a central research question: “Can the use of zines improve retention and
promote deep and meaningful learning?” Through a mixed-methods approach, study
data demonstrated that “yes,” zines can promote deep and meaningful learning
experiences, including productive conceptual changes and improved content retention.
Data also supported further potential for the use of zines in education.
